Chapter Twelve

I didn’t know if I would be able to tell him. But I knew that I couldn’t tell him nothing, because everything was making me cry. I didn’t know whether it was the hormones or whether it was the situation or whether I was just completely overwhelmed. Either way, I gathered every bit of courage that I could and blurted out my secret.

“I’m pregnant,” I said.

John said nothing for a long time. He turned to the steering wheel and put his hands on it. He stared out the window for so long that I was worried that his mind had drifted. I didn’t know what to say or what to offer.

“John?” I finally managed. “Did you hear me?”

He turned bright red.

“Did I hear you?” he asked, and I knew he was angry. “Yes, I heard you say the one thing that I didn’t ever want you to say.”

The tears flowed even more.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I don’t know how it happened. We were careful, or so I thought. I thought that...to be honest, I was starting to think I couldn’t get pregnant at all, given the way that Brent treated me. I had never had so much as a pregnancy scare with him, and now here I am…

“Are you sure?” John asked me, and I nodded my head.

“I’m sure,” I said. “That’s where I went, to get it checked out. I took a test, and the doctor told me…”

“Is it mine?” he asked, and I nodded. “How can you be sure? How can you be sure that it’s not that…?”

“Well, I’m only three weeks along,” I said. “And there hasn’t been anyone else. So yes, I’m sure it’s yours.”

“OK,” he replied. “OK. Well, at least there is that. But Cassidy, this can’t...happen.”

The tears came even harder.

“I know you said that it couldn’t. I know you said that, but won’t you—”

“You don’t understand,” he growled at me. “The future of the Dragon fate for this clan is making sure we can choose our next Alpha.”

“But you can still choose the next Alpha,” I said to him. “I promise. I’ll just…”

“No,” he shook his head. “If anyone knows that child even exists…”

“What if no one knows this child exists?” I said softly. He whipped his head around to me.

“You want to keep it?” he asked, and I sighed.

“I mean, I don’t know,” I replied. “I just...I didn’t want to make a choice right away. I know that I couldn’t…I can’t...I don’t know what I want.”

“Well, you have to figure out what you want,” he said, still staring straight ahead. “Because I can’t be with you if you have this baby.”

“So, what?” I suddenly felt very protective of the child that I didn’t know yet. “You want to force me to get rid of it?”

“No,” I replied. “I don’t want to force you to get rid of it. It’s your body, and it’s your choice. But if you choose to keep it, you have to go into hiding, and you can never tell anyone.
